Rockhound Hideaway is nestled on the edge of the Ottawa National Forest along the Black River on a stretch of waterfalls near the shores of Lake Superior. Whether looking for comforts of home or a rustic adventure, I offer an array of pet friendly accommodations to call home during your stay.
Rockhound Hideaway offers four different lodging options to meet all comfort levels.
There is one shared outdoor space a short distance from each property for all guests to share should they care to mingle. The shared space features an enclosed screened space, a fireplace, seating area and yard games. All lodging is pet friendly but I do ask pets remain leashed in common spaces. If you are interested in booking multiple units or the entire property, I am happy to accommodate whenever possible and offer discounts for entire property rentals.
There is a wood-fired Finnish Sauna for all my guests to share and enjoy, and is a perfect end to a long day of outdoor adventures, no matter the season.
The Agate Grove Bell Tent is the most rustic lodging option. You'll enjoy falling asleep to the sound of the trees and the river on a full size bed in this off grid unit. Lighting is provided by a combination of solar and battery. Your kitchen features amenities similar to camping, offering a two burner propane stove, charcoal grill and pour over coffee. Equipped with cookware and dishes, drinking water, rainwater for non-drinking uses and bedding. This rental has a private outhouse and solar shower. I am located on the edge of the National Forest and wildlife are present. All food and coolers are to be stored in the critter box located outside of the unit. Your parking space is a 200 foot walk away through the woods and a collapsible wagon is provided to help you carry your gear. Agate Grove is the perfect getaway for those seeking a camping with extra comfort, modern conveniences and without the hassle of gear.
This cozy unit offers the comfort of a full size bed with parking right next to your Shasta. Operating off grid, it has battery powered lights with a two burner propane stove inside as well as a charcoal grill and bonfire ring outside. The kitchen is equipped with all cookware, dishes and drinking water. There are many types of wildlife in the area and your cooler and food must be stored inside your unit. There is a two stall outhouse 100ft from your space that is shared with Agate Grove Bell Tent. Please note there is no power supply other than the battery operated lights and there is no shower, running water or refrigerator.
For the nature experience with all of your creature comforts, this is the option for you. The Shell Cabin is ideal for two guests but can accommodate up to four. The bedroom offers a full size bed and the living room couch pulls out into a queen size. This cabin provides all the comforts of home including standard electricity, running water, standard bathroom with shower, kitchen with mini fridge and propane heat. If you want all the comforts of home in a serene wooded setting, this option is for you.
This cozy little studio cabin is my personal residence, however I purchased and am fixing up my Great Aunt and Uncle's cabin a few doors north, so when I'm planning to be there working on it, or am out of town, I will occasionally rent out my personal space for others to enjoy!
You'll have a queen size bed, running water, all the comforts of home and small fenced backyard area are private for your use.
A true gem of the U.P., Black River Harbor is great for recreation of all kinds. Enjoy a cookout with the amenities of the pavillion, fishing or swimming in the river or lake, or beach bonfire at sunset with endless rockhounding opportunities.
Known by many names, the largest of the great lakes was called Kitchigami by our Native neighbors. Roughly translated to 'The Big Lake,' it is just that. With a feel as vast as the ocean, the water can offer waves large enough for surfing and calm that looks like glass with a clear view to the sand and rocks beneath.
The longest of the National Scenic Trails in the Country, spans 4800 miles from North Dakota to Vermont and passes right by Rockhound Hideaway. Head South and hike the NCT to four waterfalls, Copper Peak. Head North and visit Rainbow Falls, the lake, the harbor and the Porcupine Mountains.
There isn't a more central location than Rockhound Hideaway to enjoy the waterfalls along the scenic and wild Black River. Following the NCT you can visit all five marked waterfalls and you are sure to find more along the way.
A rare opportunity exists five miles down the road to take a ride or hike to the top of Copper Peak Ski Jump. Open from late May to mid October, this adventure ride will leave you breathless with panoramic views of the Ottawa, Lake Superior and everything in between.
It is a scenic 25 minute drive to Ironwood, which boasts a downtown district with small town charm. Visit Northwind Co-op for local produce, meats, and more. Stop at our local boutiques, visit an art gallery, grab a coffee and ice cream or bring your pup to the dog friendly brewery. You'll feel right at home in our friendly community.
